The account that I am currently using is stuck with an email that I cannot change. Should I make a new account?

I want to change my primary email, so I went to the account settings and went in the "Email Addresses" section. I put in the email address that I wanted to use in the "New email address" text box. when I clicked save, an error popped up saying that someone was already using that email (which was me). Help?
